This summer I will be attending my very first
Renaissance Faire and I have to say that I am extremely excited. From what I have heard and seen on video, it is an awesome site to see.
Renaissance Faires are more like a huge craft fair with historical reenactments. I would say 95% of everyone that participates in the festival is dressed in
costumes and carrying
swords and
armor. The costumes, or
garb as they called it in the Elizabethan period, are very detailed and historically accurate. They also have performance artists at the Renaissance Faire which include musicians, magicians, jugglers and others. There are thousands of booths selling crafts and food of the period and don't forget the English Ale!
Although there are no dress codes it is always best to dress up. Not only does it make you feel better and gets you in the mood but it also makes for great conversation. Typically if you don't want to go all out just some simple leather shoes or sandals is fine with a blowsy shirt and snug pants with no pockets is just fine. The larger Renaissance Faires have rental costumes for the day and you can always purchase medieval armor and helmets and clothing while you are there.
It's a fun experience if you have never been so I am looking forward to dressing up and picking a sword fight with a local... To find a fair in your state, check out
