It's been awhile since we've talked about them, but did you know that almost the entire line of Lord of the Rings Swords is once again available? For quite awhile, the full line of United Cutlery's officially licensed LOTR equipment wasn't available due to some financial turbulence within United, but last year, we started to see a resurgence; today, nearly all of the original United LOTR gear is available.

I'm a bit partial to the LOTR series because I love New Zealand (it really is a neat place) and because my friend and I bumped into some of the crew and Rivendell sets while hiking around Kaitoke Park...a small park outside of Wellington, NZ. Lord of the Rings Swords

One of the modern-day classics in cinema is Peter Jackson's version of JRR Tolkein's LOTR series. A longtime favorite among the staff here and a huge number of our customers, Samurai Swords have always been great for practicing martial arts, sprucing up household decor, or putting the hurt on mats or watermelons. Over the weekend, I took a little time to setup a brand new sound system for the home theater. Once I had it all configured, I need a rousing way to test it out, so I reached for my POTC: At World's End DVD. The movie sounded great, but all the fantastic swashbuckling sword play reminded me that right here at Replica Dungeon, we have a great selection of Pirate Swords based on the POTC series and more!

Pirates have been plying the seas since around the 13th century BC, but perhaps the most well known of the early marauders are from the Middle Ages...Vikings. They pillaged Western Europe, North Africa, and Italy, taking advantage of the lack of any real centralized governments during that era. Next in our popular memory would be the Barbary Pirates, who operated from North Africa and Morocco until the 19th century.

All that being said, perhaps the most popular of the high seas raiders are those who operated in the Caribbean from around 1560 until the early 1700's. Thanks to Disney and the wonderful Pirates of the Caribbean theme park ride and, later, the blockbuster series of POTC movies, just about everyone in modern society associates old-time piracy with the Caribbean.

Many of the swords and daggers that we carry come with a plaque or some sort of stand, but a large number do not. So what's a good way to show off your new collection piece? We also have a number of stands, frames, and hangers for all of our replica guns.

One thing you must consider before choosing a plaque or stand is how you want to display your weapon; vertical, horizontal, hung, or on a desk or table...these are probably the most important considerations you have to take into account. There are some blades that for whatever reason, seem better being displayed one way over another. Take the Samurai sword, for example, these types of blades seem very well suited to horizontal display on a cabinet or desk rather than being hung on a wall, especially when grouped with multiple blades. Many European style blades tend to look great hanging vertically on the wall since many of us are used to seeing them hanging on a Medieval castle's wall in a photo or movie. Giving the Hobbit Direction

Well, any LOTR fan by now knows that today it was announced that Guillermo del Toro was named to direct The Hobbit and it's follow on sequel. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh aren't far away though as they'll be working with Guillermo and overseeing everything. Based on what we've seen from Guillermo, I think it's safe to say that we're in good hands...I know everyone's looking forward to seeing the films. For anyone not familiar with the plans, The Hobbit covers Bilbo Baggins and the sequel will cover the 60 years that run between the period of Bilbo's adventures and the LOTR series.

Naturally, New Zealand will play a pivotal role as it did in the LOTR films since WETA will be creating Middle Earth again, which means we're probably going to see some fantastic props in keeping with the high quality Lord of the Rings Swords we've had for a few years now. I suspect we'll see some familiar things, but I also think we're going to see a great many new things to feed our Tolkien collection diet! No matter what, it's good to see that The Hobbit has untangled itself from all the legal webs that shrouded it for a few years and will be allowed to add to the magical world Jackson's managed to put together for us so far.

300 Leonidas Spartan Helmet Update

You may or may not have noticed, but we have finally received the long awaited NECA 300 Leonidas Spartan Helmet and now have it available in extremely limited quantities! If you're not familiar with the story behind these helmets, then I invite you to cruise through our blog's archives to get a sense of what's been going on. In a nutshell though, we're approaching the anniversary of when the helmets were originally supposed to be released.

From the stories we've heard from NECA and others, the helmets, part of our popular 300 Spartan Swords section, started from a prototype image and worked its way through a number of design changes and manufacturing wrinkles over the past 9 months. As we neared the end of 2007, each month was marked by an endless series of time line changes and it wasn't until January of this year that we received somewhat concrete word that the helmet would indeed see a release date in April, but thanks to production issues, probably wouldn't be produced for too long.

Anyway, here we are in April and we have indeed received the helmets we ordered long ago. The helmets do not really resemble the original prototype images except perhaps in the basic styling. They're also a lot more fragile than we anticipated, making them great display pieces, but probably not too suitable for "everyday" costume wear. Now don't get me wrong, they don't look bad, they just look a little different than what we were expecting.

So, if you're a 300 fan, I urge you to pick up one today before they're all gone...I do not expect that we'll get any more of those helmets based on the last word we had from NECA.

Harry Potter Movie Props

Restricted Replica Guns

Gun control is one of those topics that always riles folks up and it's something I'm not going to get into here, but its side effects do impact our ability to get non-firing Replica Guns into some people's hands. Many of our customers are quite surprised by this, but the fact is that there are simply some locations that prohibit their citizens from getting a hold of what essentially amounts to non-functional display pieces.

We've seen a substantial rise in the popularity of our Replica Firearms from both our US and Canadian customers. For the most part, we can satisfy everyone's needs in both countries; however, various rules govern both areas. Luckily, we post the most well-know restrictions on each of our replica gun product listings; however, at the end of the day, it's up to you, the customer, to know what Western Pistols or WW2 Weapons you can and can't buy.

So what are the restrictions? For our Canadian friends, the basic restrictions are relatively easy to explain...if it is a replica gun whose real-life counterpart could fire what's thought of as modern-looking bullets, you're not allowed to bring it into the country. To be more exact, Canada only allows flintlocks, cap and ball, or percussion weapons, replica or not, to be imported. Not surprisingly, we've found that sometimes it also depends on who inspects your package at the border...you can be importing a perfectly legal Old Western replica gun, but perhaps the officer's knowledge about the types allowed is lacking and they end up rejecting it. It's kind of a crap shoot sometimes.

For our US customers, the rules aren't quite as restrictive, but that doesn't mean we're out of the woods. Puerto Rico, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and Minnesota don't allow replica firearms that date after 1898, although some do provide exceptions for theatrical, police, or other governmental use. California (suprised?) and Kansas don't restrict the dates, but they take a different approach in requiring that replica guns be shipped with a display frame or presentation box. Naturally, some localities in the US go even further, but that's the point where customers need to have some awareness.

So, you can see that a great majority of our customers can enjoy a great looking replica firearm in their living room collection or in their local playhouse while a smaller number have to work within the restrictions placed upon them by their lawmakers. Whatever the case, Replica Dungeon offers a great variety of firearms that can satisfy customers from any location! And remember, if you ever have a question, just ask! Every once in awhile, I drop in an update about United Cutlery's swords and their LOTR series. Well, today brings another bit of good news for us and fans of the series who are looking to grab a piece of Middle Earth. After a very extended absence, we have finally received a fresh stock of the Officially Licensed Sword of the Witchking!

On par with the beauty of the Anduril - Flame of the West blade, the Witchking sword is truly a great looking and imposing piece of weaponry. Measuring a little over 54 1/2" long, this movie replica sword is massive, making it an excellent candidate as a centerpiece to any home collection or decoration. From "toy" quality to high-end functional swords, it's all out there and wading through it all can be a real challenge at times. For us, we try hard to find good quality replicas because at the end of the day, they're not going to give you problems down the road. That being said, we do have some blades that we aren't really fond of, but they either fill a void or they're popular, warts and all. That's part of the reason we try to use a quality rating guide on as many of our replica swords as possible, but given that personal tastes and requirements vary, it's not a system without its flaws. War Helm of the Witchking

After a very long absence, we're happy to announce that the official Lord of the Rings War Helm of the Witchking back in stock! This special edition helmet from United Cutlery, is a limited release of 3000 helmets and is an authentically detailed reproduction of the helmet worn by the fearsome Witchking of Angmar.

Probably one of the coolest evildoers in the film, the Witchking was brought down by Eowyn during the Siege of Minas Tirith with a little help from Merry. Movie Replicas

Ok, so 10,000 B.C. wasn't all that great, but we can take heart in knowing that the Hollywood treadmill still turns and that sooner or later we'll end up with another fantastic movie like 300! Things weren't looking good when nearly every well-known review source savaged the film, but when my colleague, the "Dungeon Master" himself, went to see it, he confirmed that it was disappointing. Before we get a question about whether or not we'll have an officially licensed 10,000 B.C. stick (okay, call it a spear), let's just say that if some decent movie props do emerge from the movie, we'll do what we can to get them.

In the meantime, while we're all waiting for the next blockbuster with great weaponry, have you noticed that a great number of our United Cutlery Lord of the Rings Swords are now back? Yep, in bits and pieces, more and more things are coming back in stock following United's reorganization. We're not quite sure just how many of their models from a few years ago will return, but things aren't looking bad right now. Fantasy Sword Spotlight

Late in February, I talked about some of the varieties found in fantasy swords. Today, I want to focus on a couple great Kit Rae fantasy blades that are fan favorites, one of which we just received a fresh shipment of.

For those of you unfamiliar with Kit Rae, he's one of the most famous fantasy and collectible weapons designers in the world. His works have appeared in countless movies and television shows such as "Spider Man 2", "X-Files", and many others. He's also overseen a multitude of licensed replica weapons for movies such as the LOTR series, "Hellboy", and "Total Recall", to name a few. He's basically the foundation from which the entire fantasy weapon market grew and is best known for his Swords of the Ancients series, which spawned art prints and stories.

We feature a number of Kit Rae's Swords of the Ancients, and I'd like to highlight one exceptional fantasy sword that we just received a fresh shipment of today...the Limited Edition Kilgorin - Sword of Darkness. There are only 1500 of these around and we have 40 of them; they will no doubt go very fast! This beautiful blade has a mostly black finish with gold plate highlights and it measures 34 1/2"; it even comes with an authentic Kit Rae print. Warrior Helmets

Throughout the ages, battle helmets have always been an integral part of any infantry combat package. From the highly stylized ceremonial affairs to the basic metal pot, helmets have generally served to either foment fear, protect the head, or to denote status. In modern times, helmets have evolved into utilitarian wonders capable of stopping many types of bullets and shrapnel, but in the ancient world fearsome styling was prevalent along with basic protection. I'm no historian and much of this is simple observations, but when you look at helmets from the past, you can easily see where the thinking was on design.

Perhaps the most recognizable helmet to most folks is the Medieval Knight Helmet. Seen in countless movies and artwork, these helmets offered a lot of protection, but at the expense of vision and mobility. There are a myriad of variations on the Knight's Helmet design, but most tend to stay in the full coverage, limited vision area, making their era pretty easy to identify.

The Greek and Roman helmets went the lighter, more mobile route and tended to allow for a little easier breathing and ventilation as many of the soldiers were on foot and needed speed. Perhaps one of the more recognizable features of these types of helmets are the strip that protects the nose. Another common feature is a channel that reveals the mouth...I picture this as a means of giving ample access to air as well as a perfect way for a soldier to reveal a fear-creating scowl as he hurtles into an enemy horde. A couple perfect examples of these types of helmets were shown off in the recent movie 300. In that movie, the Spartan Helmet was prominent as was the beautifully regal King Leonidas Helmet.

Whatever the type of ancient helmet, most had few of the comforts we have in helmets today such as suspension systems or additional padding. I can imagine that most were great at creating concussions and ringing ears....but on the other hand, having a sword cleave your skull was an alternative that most warriors wouldn't want to experience.

Safe Firearm Alternatives

We are often asked about our replica firearms and whether or not they are real, plastic, or otherwise, plus whether or not they are safe. We're happy to say that all of our replica firearms are indeed metal and, for the most part, work and feel like their real counterparts....except for the firing part. None of our replica guns can be made to fire, so they make a safe alternative for any sort of display piece.

Now what about safety? Safety is a relative thing when it comes to any replica weapon. While none of our replica guns can fire anything, they are still metal and therefore have a bit of weight to them, plus they look exactly like the real thing. We always urge everyone to treat weapons, replica or otherwise, as such and not to use them in a way that makes the nightly news.

Can you get one? Yes, you can! Of course, that's a loaded answer because in some parts of the country and in Canada, there are restrictions on what types you can get...yes, even for "fake" guns! Some places even require that replica firearms be shipped with a display frame. It's always important to be aware of your local laws so that you can purchase with confidence.

Start Collecting

I get phone calls all the time from folks asking what kind of sword they should get to start a collection and I always tell them there's no default "starter" sword out there. It really comes down to the sword that makes you go "wow"...believe me, that alone can give you a multitude of possibilities if you've never had any type of sword in your hand. But figuring out a type of sword can go a long way to getting you started.

Generally speaking, you can break down swords to a few categories - Medieval, Fantasy, and Samurai. Naturally, there are quite a number of other categories, but when you think about it, the vast majority could fit under any of those three major categories one way or the other. Within those categories, the cost to get in the door can range from less than $100 to $2000 and up. For a new collector just starting out, something between $50-250 is probably a good range to spend on a new sword. There's nothing worse than sinking a huge amount of money into a new hobby only to find out that your interest wanes in a few months; a small investment in a good, inexpensive sword will give you a good taste without a bitter aftertaste.

For a new collector, you're probably going to want to get a stainless steel sword because the care and maintenance on that type of sword is less demanding than that of a carbon steel sword, i.e. stainless doesn't rust. The most common type of starter sword style? From what we've seen, I would have to say Samurai swords. These types of swords are very popular because many people like to collect the three-piece sets for household decor and also because a lot of us grew up watching kung fu movies that featured Samurai's and Ninja's...that's what I think at least, heh.

Choosing a good starter sword can be a difficult and time consuming process, but if you think carefully about your tastes and what gets your blood pumping, you'll soon find the process gets a lot easier.

Polyresin Masterpieces

Polyresins are a fantastic material for creating all sorts of products, from picture frames and artwork, to vases and tabletop protectors. With mold-making abilities, variable color choices, durability, and the ability to take surface painting, polyresins have exploded in popularity within both industrial and household uses.

One of the more exciting uses of polyresin comes in the form of miniatures or furnishings depicting almost anything imaginable with extremely high detail. The durability inherent in polyresins makes miniatures nearly indestructible when compared to porcelain and ceramics. Chipping the nose on a priceless figurine becomes a more remote possibility with polyresins.

One great example of what's possible with polyresins would be our Crusaders Bookends. These polyresin bookends are prime examples of excellent detail and exceptional hand painting, with the folds of the knight's tunic appearing to flow smoothly over his armor, which has been delicately highlighted with paint. Fantasy Swords

I've talked about it many times in the past, but having a sword on display is just plain cool and a neat way to introduce a conversation piece that's a bit different than the traditional coffee table book. Generally, Medieval Swords tend to dominate the decorating tastes of most people, but let's not forget about the wonderful world of Fantasy Swords.

Sometimes fanciful and completely impractical, fantasy swords provide a unique alternative to the standard historical fare. Many of these swords really don't stray too far from the design basics found in their Medieval brethren, making them easy to blend in with any decor or personal taste. Take our Dragon Fantasy Sword, for example; it's a really beautiful 42" sword that features a hidden dagger in its pommel. The design of the sword is pure fantasy and yet it stays close enough to standard designs to make it an attractive alternative.

Taking a step away towards the more fanciful variety is the Dragon Lord Fantasy Sword, a great looking 40" blade that has both an unusual guard and an added arrowhead-style tip blade. I can't picture going to battle with this sword as that arrowhead tip would likely make the sword a permanent fixture in whatever it was stabbed into, but it's a fun sword for the collection nonetheless.

The varieties of fantasy swords are nearly endless and some of them approach a "work of art" status. In any case, the fantasy realm provides the avid collector with an avenue away from the usual. Display Swords

I'm fairly certain this has come up before, but I was recently asked by one of our customers what sword would really make a stand out display piece for their home. Surrounded by all sorts of beautiful swords here in the office, it's really hard to narrow that sort of thing down to one or two, but let me take a swing at what I think are great pieces.

Let's first talk about the type of blade you should have for a display sword. Generally, there are carbon steel swords and stainless steel swords. If you're going for a pure display piece, we recommend a sword constructed with stainless steel. The reasons are simple...care and maintenance. Stainless steel blades require considerably less upkeep than their generally more practical carbon steel brothers, usually a wipe with a soft cloth takes care of most problems. Carbon steel swords, on the other hand, require regular maintenance in order to keep them free of rust. That's not to say that either one is better than the other, but if you're the type of person who likes to "set it and forget it", then stainless is the way to go.

The next determining factor is the overall styling of your home. Obviously, if your home has any sort of Oriental styling, then a Samurai Sword set would be the way to go. Even a single Katana blade with a stylishly designed stand would be perfect. Cabinets or hallway chests seem to be the most popular resting places for Oriental displays.

A more common styling for the home means Medieval Swords or even some of the Fantasy Swords would work best. Probably one of our more popular display swords is the Black & Gold King Solomon Sword because it's large, detailed, brightly colored and great looking. Another one of my favorites is the Freemason Masonic Sword; a sword popular for it's slim, but intricate design. Both of the swords come with a nice looking display plaque, which brings to mind another factor to look for....the plaque. Getting a sword that includes the plaque ensures that you'll have something that's matched to the dimensions of your sword...not too mention it saves you the pain of finding one that'll look right. Of course, you can always go with a floor/table stand for your sword, but it seems like European swords just look better hanging from a wall. I guess it must be all those films and images we have of knights and castles that create that feeling.

The key point in any display is to just have fun with it!

Forging Legends

Being a big Lord of the Rings movie series fan, I have all 3 of the special extended edition sets. I tend to watch all three sets over a week every few months without fail. Maybe it's geekie, but I watch every bit of every DVD in the 3 sets. The movies are great, but the REAL gold mine, besides all of the commentaries those films include, is in the hours upon hours of special documentary material that tracks the creation of the LOTR films.

One of the unique things the LOTR films brought to the silver screen is a completely believable set of cultures and weaponry that had to be created from the ground up. Of particular interest are the portions detailing the creation of the swords and armor of the LOTR movies. I can't help but notice that while our Anduril sword may not be fully "functional" like the real thing, it is every bit as beautiful as the one you see in the film. The same could be said for our Fighting Knives of Legolas, they reflect the very same Elvish details you see in the films. Okay, I'm jesting about the hot weather; it's only 50 some odd degrees here at the Replica Dungeon HQ, but in comparison to the last couple of weeks, it's a heat wave! Really, I want to alert you to some hot new arrivals to our store, on top of all the daggers that I've talked about this week.

Yesterday I talked about a couple of new additions to our Fantasy Dagger section, but I gave short shrift to another knife class that's seen some additions at Replica Dungeon. When it comes to Medieval things, generally our swords and Medieval Decor are the most popular things; however, our Medieval Dagger selection is starting to bubble with some new arrivals in our catalog.

Ranging from elegant ceremonial style affairs to basic protection, our Medieval Daggers offer a very cheap way to slip through the door of collecting blades. Here's one example- Did you know that many women during the Renaissance stuffed knives in their bosom for protection? Apparently, it really happened and we have an example of such a blade with our Bosom Dagger. The dagger is extremely small and basic; perfect for concealing in the clothing of that era. New Fantasy Daggers

Just a new product alert for all you Fantasy Dagger fans. We've just added 2 new daggers to our collection from two different blade designers. First, from the mind of Paul Ehlers of 1981's cult-hit "Madman" film, is the Draconic Rex Soul Reaver. This knife is enormous, measuring just a touch over 2 feet with a dragon's head hand guard. Four stainless steel blades project from this knife in a way that's sure to impress any fantasy dagger aficionado. The initial stocks of this dagger are pretty low, so you'll have to hurry if you want to get your hands on this one.

Our second new arrival is the Golden Dragon Claw Dagger, the work of designer Tom Anderson. This more conventional dagger measures around 14 inches and has an acid etched stainless steel blade. It's a pretty neat looking knife, especially with the flame-painted stand that it comes with. Stocks are a little better than the Soul Reaver, but still somewhat limited.

United Cutlery Rising

It wasn't long ago when United Cutlery was in bankruptcy and a whole swath of great replica weapons, such as their licensed Lord of the Rings series, started disappearing. Today, the situation is decidedly better as United Cutlery has been reborn with a mission to continue the tradition of producing great blades.

Not long ago, we saw the re-emergence of the legendary Anduril sword and shortly, we'll see the Fighting Knives of Legolas back in stock. Other United Cutlery swords from the LOTR series are arriving weekly, bringing a big smile to the faces of all the LOTR replica collectors...including us!

For all you Rambo fans out there, this Friday is your day as the new Rambo film hits the screens! Many said it would never happen and many said it shouldn't happen, but nevertheless it has happened...we once again get to see John Rambo go on a tear in the jungles of Burma. In this latest chapter of the series, Sylvester Stallone's Rambo is recruited to lead a team of mercenaries on a mission to rescue missionaries and villagers from the murderous Major Pa Tee Tint of the Burmese Army.

Now the reviews for the movie have been all over the place from the "It's absolutely horrible" camp to the "It's a great action flick" camp, so it's probably going to come down to people's appetite for endless destruction and gore at the hands of their favorite one man army. I don't think anyone could accuse any of the Rambo series of being exquisite examples of cinematic art at its finest, but this film ought to be decent enough to provide thrilling entertainment.

Opened My Mouth

Ah, how life works out. Last week, I was talking about how warm and nice it was; I think mother nature was listening...this week it's below freezing every night and the days are lucky to see 50. On top of that, my home's gaspack decided that 20 or so years was long enough to serve and promptly died. Without heat for the past few nights while waiting for the heater to get fixed, it got me thinking about a movie coming up in March - 10,000 B.C.

Roland Emmerich is directing the movie; he's the same fella that brought us "The Day After Tomorrow", "Godzilla", and "Independence Day", among others. It's a tale about a young prehistoric mammoth hunter that is on a quest to save his people from extinction. During the quest, he encounters a lost civilization, mammoths, and sabre-toothed cats. The details are still a bit on the light side since it's still 2 months out, but it does sound like an interesting movie; the previews look pretty good.

We'll most likely watch this movie, not only because it looks decent, but also because it will likely spawn some new weaponry! Yes, it's in no way historical, but who cares? It's a movie! Hopefully, this movie will go over like "Independence Day" rather than the flop that was"Godzilla". If that happens, then we'll definitely see some goodies like our ever popular 300 Spartan Sword and the Godfred Viking Sword. As usual, we here at Replica Dungeon will keep our ear to the ground and eyes open for any stone age tech that evolves; pardon the pun. ;)

Winter Respite

I don't know about your area of the country, but here at Replica Dungeon HQ in North Carolina, we're experiencing periods of almost summer-like weather with tiny bits of old man winter sprinkled in. Normally at this time of the year, we're hovering in the 30's and 40's, but lately, we've been in the mid 70's. Now I know some of you out there are still shivering your butt off and some of you have yet to grasp the concept of cold weather, but for those of you experiencing the respite from the cold, it's time to get out and have fun!

There's no better time than to steal away and relive the medieval times with a Godfred Viking Sword in one hand and a Viking Tankard in the other! No, we're not advocating a drunken Viking rampage, just good, clean fun in the warm and sunny weather. Helmet Headaches

We're quickly closing in on the one year anniversary since we began offering the 300 Leonidas Spartan Helmet as a pre-order for our customers. Since then, the manufacturer, NECA, has pushed back the release date every other month or so until last November when a 1-2 month shipping window emerged.

Today, we learned new information...the helmet will most likely come out during March in a limited production run to fill existing orders and then disappear. What's that mean for our customers who have been waiting for these helmets? Good news; your orders should finally arrive in March. What about those customers who haven't ordered one yet? You may be out of luck; nothing can be guaranteed beyond the pre-orders we already have. We're keeping a close eye on things to see what develops, so stay tuned!

2008 looks to be a great year! We're looking at some fantastic movie possibilities down the road and, of course, we'll keep looking for the accompanying gear to go with them. After a lengthy absence in the wake of United Cutlery's bankruptcy late last year, we are happy to say that their beautiful Anduril-Flame of the West LOTR sword has re-appeared! Probably one of the most impressive swords in the LOTR series, the Anduril produced by United Cutlery is an absolute masterpiece for the price! I ran around our offices the other day wielding this huge sword and really liked it; it feels extremely solid, has good balance and makes you want to hold it in two hands while you look over your shoulder and utter the words, "For Frodo", before charging down the hall.

Hopefully, the re-emergence of this blade indicates that our other United Cutlery LOTR equipment will soon be back!

Movie Alert

It looks like we're in for a nice little treat on December 7th; The Golden Compass hits general release in theaters. Why should you care? Well, this movie is the first in a trilogy that some have said is on the scale of Lord of The Rings; I'm not sure any movie could top that epic series, but it is being released by the same folks that did LOTR, New Line Cinema, so it could be big.

From the bits and pieces that I've read, the plot of The Golden Compass revolves around Lyra, an orphan who lives in a fantastic world (a parallel universe) dominated by a power hungry body called the Magisterium. The Magisterium endeavors to control all of humanity; however, there is a threat to its plans...the Golden Compass. Guess who has the Golden Compass...Lyra.

The movie looks fantastic from the small glimpse you get with the trailer. It has had some issues during production with the first director bailing out after realizing that the scale of the trilogy would be LOTR-like, but from the initial reviews, it looks like we're in for a great film! Just imagine Nicole Kidman playing a villain....yep!

As with any film of this nature, if we see any replica fantasy swords hit the street, you'll see them on Replica Dungeon. You never know, perhaps we'll have some polar bear armor to add to our Armor & Shields section. ;)

Bring On The Spaghetti

The other night, while cruising through the endless number of channels on television, I happened upon what is probably the greatest Spaghetti Western ever made - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. It wasn't the first time I'd stumbled upon it and I know it won't be the last, but it seems like every time this Sergio Leone masterpiece catches my eye, I'm compelled to watch it to the end.

Released to US audiences just over a year after its release in Italy in 1966, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly portrays 3 gunslingers who wade through chaotic and violent gunfights, public hangings, and Civil War battles while trying to beat each other to a cache of gold buried in a war cemetery. Throughout the movie, tenuous alliances are repeatedly formed and broken between the 3 while each tries to figure out what the other knows so they can take the gold for themselves.

Clint Eastwood (good), Lee Van Cleef (bad), and Eli Wallach (ugly), playing Blondie, Angel Eyes, and Tuco, respectively, put on a performance that, to me, is unrivaled in Westerns. Each of these guys are ruthless and calculating....and very cool. Eastwood and Van Cleef give you the hard, cold face of the old West while Tuco is a little looser and prone to calamity. One of the coolest features of this movie, besides the spectacular Spanish scenery, is Leone's propensity to focus in tightly on the eyes of the 3 actors. Not only does that lend to the drama that's usually at play during the moment it happens, but you can really pickup on the nature of each of the characters - Blondie's steely gaze wearing down his target, Angel Eye's furtive squinting, and Tuco's looks of suspicion. I can only describe the photography in this movie as incredible.

There is just SO much to this film, but the last moments in the movie are probably some of the most memorable among all Westerns. I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it yet, but watching Tuco running among the tombstones, looking for some sign of the gold, with a strangely haunting musical score accompanying...it's awesome. Of course, that leads to a showdown that has me hanging on the edge of my seat even though I've seen it dozens of times; fantastic stuff! The end is much like the beginning....hanging around. ;)

If you've never watched The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, then you're missing out on the greatest Spaghetti Western ever made! It's a "must see" movie and a deserves a place in any Wild West aficionado's collection right beside the replica pistols and rifles.

We finally heard some good news directly from NECA a couple of days ago; it's not everything we wanted to hear, but it's good news nonetheless. They are now finalizing the design, creating the helmet out of fiberglass. The "brush" feature on top of the helmet is being made from horsehair! According to our rep at NECA, they "look awesome"! Additionally, shipping time is said to be within 1 or 2 months at the most. The Re-Emergence of Beowulf

Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon poem about a Norse warrior who comes to the aid of a Dane king to rid the land of Grendel, an evil and murderous troll monster. An earlier incarnation of this epic tale, Beowulf & Grendel, entered the theaters back in 2005 (2006 in the US), but now we have a brand new adaptation to look forward to, hitting US theaters on November 16.

The new version, simply called Beowulf, takes the tale and gives it a new twist while expanding the filming technology of motion capture a little further. Generally speaking, the film remains true to the original poem in areas, but director Robert Zemeckis has applied his own adaptations in the areas of dialogue, timelines, and character traits, among other things. Perhaps the most striking thing about the film is that it is not your typical live action film; it is filmed entirely in a motion capture technique similar to the one used in Polar Express, the last Zemeckis film, but with some improvements. All of the actors were filmed on a motion capture stage and then later altered with computer-generated effects. From all reports, the animated characters bear a strong resemblance to their human references. This should all make for a pretty interesting film about dragons, trolls, good, and evil.

From the reviews that we have seen here at Replica Dungeon, this new version of Beowulf has received generally good marks with some reviewers urging viewers to watch the movie in the 3D version. I think we are all in for good ole fashioned bloodbath movie fun with this one.

I must be getting old because they just don't make any good Westerns anymore. Remember back in the 70's when the only thing on TV were great wild west shows? Great news everyone! United Cutlery has just signed the license for Lord of the Rings and will soon be back into production for these sought after swords. Its rumored that only the Anduril will be available this holiday season with the bulk of the others coming the first of the year. This is the best information we have gotten all year and we know you are just as excited as we are to once again start stocking the Lord of the Rings swords!

How about some more news...United Cutlery has also signed and gained the license for the Heroes TV series and will start production on Hero swords very soon.
